Herbal Feed Supplements for Dairy Cattle: A Guide for Veterinary Distributors

Dairy farmers increasingly look for herbal and nutritional supplements to support their cattle through calving, lactation and seasonal stress. For veterinary distributors, PCD companies and importers, this is a growing category, and private label supply makes it easy to build your own range. Here is what to know.

Common types of herbal and nutritional cattle supplements

  • Calcium supplements (oral gels and liquids), commonly used around calving and in high-yielding animals
  • Mineral mixtures to balance minerals missing from fodder
  • Vitamin supplements such as vitamin A and D3 preparations
  • Herbal liver tonics to support appetite and digestion
  • Bolus formulations for easy dosing
  • Udder-care and uterine-care herbal supplements used as part of herd wellness programmes

Supplements support nutrition and wellness; they do not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment. Farmers should follow their veterinarian's advice.

Why distributors add herbal supplements

  • Steady, repeat demand from dairy farmers and cooperatives
  • Good fit alongside existing veterinary medicines and feed
  • Growing interest in herbal and natural products in animal health
  • Easy to build an own-brand range with private label manufacturing

How private label veterinary manufacturing works

  1. Choose products: start with ready formulations (calcium liquid, mineral mixture, liver tonic) or request a custom formula.
  2. Packaging and label: select bottles, jars or pouches and finalise label content for your market.
  3. Production: batches are manufactured, tested and packed under your brand.
  4. Dispatch: delivery across India, or export packing with documents for registration abroad.

Exporting veterinary supplements

Veterinary products are usually registered in the importing country by a local importer with the national veterinary authority (for example, Kenya's Veterinary Medicines Directorate). The Indian manufacturer supplies product dossiers, Certificates of Analysis and manufacturing documents. Export promotion councils such as Pharmexcil also circulate buyer enquiries for veterinary products.
