How to Start Your Own Ayurvedic Brand in India: A Private Label Guide

Ayurveda is one of the fastest-growing wellness categories in India and abroad, and you no longer need your own factory to build a brand in it. With private label (also called white label) manufacturing, a licensed Ayurvedic manufacturer makes the product and you sell it under your own name. This guide walks through the steps, from idea to first batch.

1. Choose a focused first range

Strong Ayurvedic brands usually launch with 3 to 6 products around one theme rather than 40 unrelated items. Popular starting points:

  • Single-herb capsules: Ashwagandha, Shilajit, Moringa, Triphala, Giloy, Shatavari
  • Hair care: herbal hair oils (onion, bhringraj, hibiscus), herbal shampoo
  • Digestive and family wellness: churnas, herbal juices, syrups
  • Personal care: herbal face wash, body wash, hand wash

Pick products your audience already searches for, and a range you can explain in one sentence.

2. Private label or custom formula?

Private label uses the manufacturer's ready, tested formulation with your branding. It is the fastest and lowest-risk route. A custom formula is developed for you, which gives you a unique product but needs more time for development, samples and stability checks. Many brands start with private label and add custom products once sales are proven.

3. Understand licensing and labelling

Ayurvedic medicines in India are manufactured under a licence issued by the state AYUSH licensing authority, and the manufacturing unit should follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). When you work with a licensed third party manufacturer, the product is made under their licence and your brand appears as the marketer. Your label must carry the details the rules require, such as the product name, ingredients, dosage, manufacturer and marketer details, licence number, batch number and dates. A good manufacturer will guide you on label content; confirm the final artwork with your own regulatory advisor.

Food and cosmetic products follow different rules (FSSAI for food supplements, and cosmetic rules for personal care), so decide early which category each product belongs to.

4. Packaging that sells

Choose packaging that fits the product and the channel: amber bottles and pump packs for oils, HDPE or PET jars for capsules and churnas, and cartons for premium positioning. E-commerce packs must survive courier handling, so ask for transit-tested cartons. Your manufacturer can share standard bottle and carton sizes to keep costs down.

5. Plan your first batch

  • Quantity: start with a practical trial batch per product, then scale with demand.
  • Samples: approve samples of the product and the packed unit before production.
  • Timeline: allow time for artwork, packaging procurement, production and quality checks.
  • Pricing: work back from your selling price, including marketplace fees, shipping, discounts and marketing.

6. Sell and grow

Most new Ayurvedic brands sell through their own website, Amazon, Flipkart and Instagram, then expand into pharmacies, clinics and distributors. Customer reviews, consistent quality and clear, honest claims build trust faster than discounts.
