Third party (contract) manufacturing lets you sell Ayurvedic products without owning a factory. The first questions most brands ask are: How much will it cost? What is the minimum order? How long will it take? The honest answer is "it depends", so here is exactly what it depends on, and how to get an accurate quote quickly.
What decides the cost per unit
- Formulation and ingredients: herbs, extracts and their quantities are the biggest cost driver. Standardised extracts and rare herbs (for example Shilajit or Safed Musli) cost more than common powders.
- Dosage form: capsules, syrups, oils, churnas and juices each need different processes and equipment.
- Pack size and packaging: bottle or jar type, caps, pumps, labels and cartons can be a large share of the cost, especially for premium packs.
- Batch size: larger batches spread setup and testing costs over more units, which lowers the unit price.
- Testing and documentation: raw material and finished product checks, and any extra certificates you need (especially for export).
Minimum order quantity (MOQ)
MOQ depends on the product and the packaging. Process-driven products such as syrups and oils are made in batches of a set size, while packaging suppliers often have their own minimums for printed labels and cartons. Ready private label formulations usually allow a smaller first order than custom formulas. Ask your manufacturer for the starting batch size for each product, and whether trial batches are possible.
Typical timeline
- Enquiry and quotation: share the product list, pack sizes and quantities.
- Samples and approval: for ready formulas this is quick; custom formulas need development time.
- Artwork and packaging: label and carton design, approval and printing. This is often the longest step.
- Production and quality checks: manufacturing, filling, packing and finished-product testing.
- Dispatch: delivery within India or export packing.
The fastest way to shorten the timeline is to finalise artwork early and use standard packaging.
How to get an accurate quote
Send your manufacturer:
- Product names or ingredient lists (or say "ready formula")
- Dosage form and pack size (for example 60 capsules, 200 ml syrup, 100 ml oil)
- Quantity per product for the first order and expected monthly volume
- Packaging preference and whether you need printed cartons
- Target market (India or export country)
Choosing the right manufacturer
Check the manufacturing licence and GMP certification, ask for product samples and Certificates of Analysis, visit the facility if you can, and make sure the team answers label and compliance questions clearly. Location matters too: a unit close to your market or a major highway reduces freight time.
